Five shifts changing how brands communicate

Less noise, more judgment. What we observe in the conversation between brands and people, and what to do about it.

From time to time a list appears of “the trends your brand can’t ignore.” Almost always they invite you to jump on the latest thing without asking whether it makes sense for the business. This is not that list. These are five shifts we see in our daily work with brands, and for each one, a useful question to ask before deciding whether it is worth acting on.

An honest note: these are agency observations, not market figures. If you need data for your category, the best approach is to measure it with your own brand.

1. From frequency to relevance

For years the rule was to post more. Today the channels are full of content that is correct and forgettable. What stands out is the piece that answers something the person actually wanted to know, solve or feel.

The question: if this post didn’t exist, would anyone miss it?

2. Short video needs an idea, not just a format

Vertical video is already part of the landscape for almost any brand. The difference is in the idea: a good short video has a clear hook, one single thing to say and an ending that doesn’t leave anyone guessing what comes next. The ones that merely “meet the format” get lost among the rest.

The question: what is the one thing that should stay in the viewer’s mind?

3. Artificial intelligence speeds up production, it doesn’t replace judgment

AI tools already help explore ideas, organize information and produce versions faster. The risk is that all brands end up sounding alike because they use the same tools with the same generic instructions. What can’t be automated is knowing what to say, what to leave unsaid and how your brand sounds when nobody is imitating it.

The tool is the same for everyone. The judgment is not.

The question: have we defined how our brand speaks, or do we depend on whatever the tool proposes?

4. Community before audience

An audience watches; a community responds, recommends and comes back. Brands that build real conversation with customers, partners and employees depend less on paid reach to be seen. That demands something unglamorous: answering, listening and showing up consistently.

The question: what do we do so that people talk with us and not just about us?

5. Social networks are also used to search

More and more people turn to social networks to look for recommendations, examples and references before buying or hiring. That makes descriptions, piece names, on-screen text and the way a profile is organized matter more than it seems.

The question: if someone lands on our profile looking for a solution, do they understand within ten seconds what we do and for whom?

To start this week
  • Review your last ten posts and mark which ones gave someone something concrete.
  • Write in one sentence how your brand speaks and which words it would never use.
  • Pick a single format to do well before adding another.
  • Define who answers comments and messages, and how quickly.

The takeaway

Trends change fast; the basics, not so much. A clear, coherent brand with something useful to say keeps winning no matter which platform is in fashion. Use trends as tools, not as strategy.
